World Cup Fever!!
World cup fever is upon us. This country has gone mad...and I love it! There are St George's flags flying from the windows of flats, the windows of cars, and the the windows of office buildings. Companies are dismissing employees early on England match days (including Universal...yay!). Newspapers and people around the country are awash in red and white - you can't help but get into it. C'MON EN-GER-LAND!England won their first match on Saturday and the country is going nuts. The USA have their first game tonight, which I hope to attend alongside Susan, who's here on a 1-night stoppver en route to Hungary. Just received this in the middle of another newsy-type email, and thought it was worthy of a share:
USA! USA! USA!
As we await this afternoon's Group E opener between the Czech Republic and God Bless America, let's put our snooty European prejudices to one side and admit that the Americans have done tremendously well to reach their current world ranking - fifth. After all, soccer is by no means the most popular sport stateside: it trails miles behind gridiron, baseball, shooting sprees, insider trading, surfing for bongo, gorging on cheeseburger-flavoured gherkin ice-creams with 12 gallons of Pepsi and making 58,768 versions of the same action movie.
